“Executive presence” is a phrase that gets tossed around constantly in leadership conversations. If you’re searching for a new role, preparing for a promotion, or stepping into senior leadership, chances are you’ve heard that you need to “develop” it. For years, it’s been positioned as the gold standard. The message was simple: if you wanted to lead, you needed to sound the part, look the part, and carry yourself a certain way. But here’s my issue: much of what we call “executive presence” is rooted in outdated notions of professionalism. And more importantly, it often isn’t the real goal. What many leaders are actually searching for is something deeper: clarity, confidence, authenticity, and, ultimately, to be recognized as a legitimate authority. And that’s a very different, and I would argue more meaningful, journey than learning how to perform leadership in a specific way. Instead of becoming more polished or more “acceptable,” it’s about becoming more you, in a way that translates into trust, influence, and leadership opportunities. I wrote all about this in my recent Entrepreneur article, where I unpack 4 powerful questions to help you move beyond performative professionalism and step into a more authentic, sustainable kind of leadership.
